Context

Despite the huge growth achieved by the gaming industry in the past two decades, both in terms of game quality and number of users, surely driven by the proliferation of the internet and smartphones, the gaming industry now faces several pressing challenges:

  1. The marginal benefits of enhancing sensory stimulation through improved game quality have sharply declined. Consequently, AAA titles are starting to struggle to breakeven due to the high development costs and competition with the most popular titles (e.g. Fortnite)
  2. The attrition rate of new users is steadily rising as they get siloed in age/ geographical cocoons and the gaming population nears the theoretical limit of the current generation.
  3. Competing forms of entertainment, such as short videos, are shifting gamers' preferences toward smartphone games.

Given these trends, products featuring a lighter gameplay are poised for a promising future and Web 3.0 and blockchain technology hold the potential to revolutionize this gaming subsector by offering:

  • Connection: Enabling players' in-game accomplishments to gain better recognition and real-life rewards, combining traditional business models with new approaches that give higher stakes for players, thereby making their contributions more valuable and feedback loops more intense to drive better engagement.
  • Validation: Providing a high-efficiency solution to validate conditions and outcomes without the need for third-party endorsement.
  • Legitimization: Offering a low-cost proof of ownership that lays the foundation for cross-product interoperability.

In the long term, these capabilities—connection, validation, and legitimization—will benefit both players and developers at the ecosystem level. Players will be empowered to own, trade, contribute, govern, and receive rewards at a low cost, thanks to blockchain technology. Users will have the option to choose whether to go on-chain or not avoiding frictions between web2/web3 gamers.

Developers will be empowered to manage ecosystems that retain the right audience, mobilize financial tool design to accommodate users with varying financial strengths, risk preferences, and attributes, and compensate them based on their contributions by saving on publisher profit margins. This approach allows for co-building the ecosystem with a more engaged community through a cross-product lifecycle strategy.

These advancements create an exciting future for both players and developers within the gaming industry to look forward to, and Moonveil is positioning within this context as a potential industry leader in both game publishing and ecosystem development.

Overview

In this context, Moonveil.GG emerges as a fresh gaming ecosystem built by a team of seasoned gaming and blockchain industry veterans, and with top-quality game products ready to go live on their ZK-powered L2 chain.

The team comprises individuals who have held C-suite positions at some of the most successful companies within their respective fields, like Netease, Funplus, CARV, and, more specifically, an impressive aggregation of talent from Riot Games, which has led to the team being informally referred to as the "Riot Mafia" within the industry. They have contributed to major gaming titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, Minecraft, and World of Warcraft, and know good games come from rapid delivery, community co-building, and agile iteration to the project.

Leveraging this deep understanding of game development, operations, and web3 technology, Moonveil aims to establish benchmarks through self-developed gaming products to set industry standards for future web3 modular gaming infrastructures to then provide a comprehensive solution for the web3 gaming sector, fostering the growth of a vibrant ecosystem of both game developers and highly engaged users.

"With game excellence at our core, our vision is to craft the authentic web3 game-centric experience tailored for the next-gen gamers”

Project Breakdown

A Multi-Layer Ecosystem:

Moonveil is pioneering a comprehensive multi-layer ecosystem structured into three distinct layers,  to foster a dynamic and interconnected gaming ecosystem.

The Infrastructure:

Within the infrastructural layer, Moonveil is building the first "Aggregated" gamer centric L2 chain, Powered by Polygon’s CDK.

In order to empower developers with modular gaming chains, allowing for highly customizable product development, Moonveil is leveraging Polygon’s zkEVM under the CDK, utilizing Ethereum as a settlement layer to ensure high security and scalability at the same time.

Polygon's CDK architecture enables custom L2 chains utilizing a framework that integrates with the Ethereum L1 for security, a modular data availability layer, various zk technologies for execution, AggLayer for cross-chain communication, and robust networking for connectivity.

The Polygon AggLayer will allow Moonveil to address the deep fragmentation of liquidity between chains, similarly to the value that it brings to TON, Ronin Network and X-Layer, by utilizing the unified zk-Bridge to abstract liquidity across the entire blockchain stack, allowing Moonveil to enhance the players’ UX and the interoperability of IDs and all ownable assets.

Tech Stack:

Polygon zkEVM: Offering the highest security guarantees and scalability and thorugh both zk-STARKS and zk-SNARK proofs. STARK is used for transaction proofs due to its faster proof generation, while a SNARK circuit verifies the STARK proof and submits it to the Ethereum network, resulting in smaller file sizes. This process can be seen as submitting a proof of proof.

EVM bytecodes are compiled into micro opcodes, ensuring seamless EVM equivalence.

AggLayer:  Using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to ensure cryptographic security for cross-chain transactions, the AggLayer connects sovereign chains together, unifying liquidity, users, and state, but with the feel of a single chain.

DA Layer: Moonveil is going to leverage a modular Data Availability layer to store the state of its chain and reduce “state bloat”, guaranteeing both security and scalability without impacting transaction costs for its users.

Particle Network: Particle Network is the first modular L1 blockchain powering Chain Abstraction by creating Universal Accounts to streamline web3 wallet interactions and give users a single address, balance, and interaction point across chains while also abstracting gas to reduce any friction point and foster web3 adoption.

Moonveils’s choices and tech stack components will unlock the best performance for the chain in terms of:

Security: By utilizing ZKPs and the zkEVM, Moonveil commits to the adoption of the goldstandard in web3 security, for both state attestations, bridging and cross-chain messaging, offering the strongest security guarantees to its users.

Interoperability: The AggLayer enables seamless communication between different blockchain networks, enabling easy transfer of assets and data across chains.

Scalability: By aggregating multiple scaling solutions, the AggLayer significantly increases the overall transaction throughput of the Polygon network.

User Experience: Thanks to the partnership with Particle Network, all frictions relative to wallets and gas will be removed for Moonveil’s users, providing a chain-abstracted experience and seamless onboarding from web2.

Decentralization: Today’s L2 are too centralized. Moonveil nodes will facilitate progressive decentralization, aligning with CDK's tech updates. As L2s evolve to reduce centralization, the community's readiness for tech stack upgrades ensures Moonveil remains at the forefront of L2 decentralization.

More specifically, Moonveil Nodes will ultimately decentralize Data Availability (DA), as well as Proof Verification and Transaction Sequencing, by following the developments in the CDK’s updates as reported in the schema below:

Moonveil - Decentralization Roadmap

Moonveil’s Strategic Approach

Developing entirely new concepts involves too much risk and is not suitable for startups due to the unproven market reception, whereas building on top of existing concepts with the goal of making games deeper, more engaging, and rewarding targets an existing player profile, reducing the risk of adoption, and allowing for adjustments and iterations based on community feedback.

PROPS - ASTRARK

Astrark - Gameplay Footage

Astrark, developed using Unity and primarily coded in Lua and C#, is an immersive tower defense mobile game that blends PvP and PvE battles with cooperative multiplayer experiences. It completed its Alpha Test in August 2024, which was supported by 79,866 enthusiastic players.

Astrark is designed to be closer to web2.5 with elements of asset tokenization, providing a familiar yet innovative experience for players. The game features three layers of design to enhance the strategic depth and engagement.

In-Game Mechanics:

The first layer focuses on in-game strategies where players deploy and combine soldiers to optimize their DPS and synergy. The right timing is crucial, as players must choose when to deploy and combine soldiers to activate the passive skills of heroes and proactively cast hero skills to benefit their side or damage the opponent. Additionally, players face strategic choices on augments during in-game events, allowing those at a disadvantage to select one out of three augments to strengthen their side and stage a comeback.

Out-of-Game Preparation:

The second layer involves out-of-game preparation through deck building. Players align their strategy by choosing one hero and five soldiers, planning combos, and preparing for counter-strategies. This preparation allows players to choose their deck style, whether it's control, aggro damage, or regeneration, ensuring a well-rounded strategy that can adapt to various challenges.

Spaceship Progression:

The third layer revolves around spaceship progression, which introduces map effects that influence gameplay. Players can build map buffs and effects such as in-game HP and shields. Additionally, runes embedded on spaceships can fundamentally change in-game buffs, with their suitability to the deck altering the gameplay dynamics. For example, a rune gem might increase a ranger soldier's attack speed by 50% after 60 seconds into the game, with the effect lasting for 10 seconds.

Astrark's comprehensive design and engaging gameplay mechanics make it a standout title in Moonveil's gaming ecosystem

PROPS - BUSHWHACK

Bushwhack, utilizing the latest Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), is Moonveil's second game featuring a unique stealth battle royale gameplay. With stronger financial and asset tokenization attributes, Bushwhack is soon poised to make its official debut: The alpha test is aimed for late Q3 2024.

Bushwhack - Gameplay Footage

Bushwhack - Gameplay Footage #2

In-Game Mechanics:

Bushwhack immerses players in a competitive arena where 8-10 players fight to be the last person standing. Players must collect and loot items, upgrade their levels, evade danger zones, hide, and ambush opponents. The game introduces a "Tarkov-like" extraction gameplay, requiring players to decide whether to engage in combat or make a strategic escape.

The game features a stratified learning curve across multiple dimensions, including hero traits growth, hero skills, in-game weapons (with skills), in-game items, and assassination methods. This approach reduces the difficulty of learning in a single dimension but increases gameplay diversity through various combinations, encouraging players to explore different strategies. Limited visibility, akin to a dark forest, elevates the importance of strategic vision control and map awareness.

Bushwhack aims to appeal to both web2 and web3 player communities, leveraging its playability, creativity, and competitive nature. During distribution, targeting both web2 and web3 audiences can generate a higher concurrent user volume, alleviating matchmaking pressures.

FORGE - FLAMING PETS

Flaming Pets, Created with Cocos for JavaScript-based games, is a fully on-chain strategic multiplayer arena game that combines PvE challenges and competitive elements. The game engages players with a dynamic core loop: Join Castle - Survive Bombing - Get Paid. Set on a large map with 25 castles, the game runs on a 2-4 hour cycle.

Flaming Pets - User Interface

In-Game Mechanics:

Players join castles, stake assets, and survive bombing rounds. Castles, initially at level 0, can level up to 8, providing benefits like reduced losses from bombings and increased ticket fee caps. Players earn XP through activities and staking, leveling up their castles for better defenses.

Bombing and Economy:

Bombs drop periodically, damaging castles based on a predetermined formula. Surviving castles distribute lost player gold to remaining nobles and lords. Players stake gold to join castles, and ticket fees contribute to the castle's TLV (Total Locked Value), influencing the economy and progression.

Roles and Upgrades:

Players can be Observers, Nobles, or Lords. Lords manage castles, set ticket prices, and use upgrades. Castle XP and Paragon Points (PP) earned at max level unlock unique upgrades, enhancing strategic depth. Activities like coin counting and tossing earn XP and AP, encouraging player engagement.

Flaming Pets' blend of strategy, cooperative gameplay, and economic management offers a rich and engaging experience for players.

Fully On-Chain Game (FOGC) Approach:

Moonveil won't be confined to the conventional FOCG format (not necessarily using existing on-chain game development engines), but they aim to explore using core elements such as data on-chain and logic on-chain to address fundamental gaming issues, thereby providing an enhanced Web3 experience.

On the surface, Flaming Pets appears to be a survival game, but the deeper level of strategy involves the interplay of decisions made by different roles (nobles vs lords) under varying risk preferences and investment costs. Although the game's underlying development still uses traditional engines, the game's data storage, logic, and random number generation are written on the blockchain. This approach addresses core issues of fairness and transparency in such games. Additionally, the game's relatively relaxed pace avoids the current TPS (Transactions Per Second) limitation pain points of FOCGs.

MINI - 2048

These types of Minigames will be strategic tools that Moonveil will leverage to build traction within targeted communities, funnel users to their ecosystem and publish through rapid iterations as creative alternatives to regular content and marketing campaigns.

2048 is the perfect example of this, in this game players combine tiles with the same number to create higher-numbered tiles, aiming to reach the tile numbered 2048. The gameplay involves sliding tiles on a grid to merge them and create new tiles, with each move adding a new tile to the grid. The objective is to strategize and plan moves to maximize tile combinations and score.

Moonveil Operations & Identity Layer:

To facilitate its multi-dimensional live operations, Moonveil is building a set of tools that will enhance community engagement, content publishing, and will also serve financialization.

Operational Tools:

Ecosystem Loyalty Program:

  • Moon Beams: a type of digital currency within the Moonveil loyalty program. Participants can earn Moon Beams by completing various tasks such as linking their social accounts, verifying their wallets, and referring new members. These points can be used to claim in-game assets or on-chain rewards in future phases of the loyalty program.
  • Badges: serving as a way to track and reward player engagement. Badges commemorate players' achievements and unlock exclusive perks, including additional Moon Beams and other exciting bonuses. These badges help enhance the player's sense of belonging within the Moonveil community.

The Identity & Data Layer:

Moonveil is dedicated to constructing a robust identity layer, encouraging players to undergo soft KYC, linking their online identities through various sources such as email, Twitter, Discord, wallets, Steam, and more.

This approach allows for a better understanding of user segmentation and profiles, preparing the foundation for long-term, bottom-up operations.

To track user growth effectively, Moonveil aims to implement a dual approach:

  1. Vertical Tracking: Utilizing identity metrics and MB points to monitor users' growth and engagement within the ecosystem.
  2. Horizontal Tracking: Implementing badge systems to record users' identities, achievements, and other attributes.

This strategy encourages the accumulation of identity systems at the ecosystem level, enhancing the interoperability of products within the ecosystem.

Moonveil’s Data Marketplace

Moonveil plans to develop a data marketplace as part of its pipeline. This marketplace aims to monetize valuable gaming data, user preferences, and other insights. The proceeds from these sales will be returned to the community through incentive campaigns, achievement prizes, and other types of rewards, ensuring that the value generated is shared with the users, to foster the growth of its ecosystem and create a positive flywheel of engagement.

Web3 Logic and Business Models:

Moonveil's Web3 logic and business model are designed to create engaging, rewarding, and sustainable experiences for all participants within the ecosystem.

This model incorporates several approaches:

  1. Player Incentive Logic:
  • A small portion of players will be able generate significant profits, becoming aspirational figures for the broader player base.
  • Encouraging players to engage in small-scale spending with the potential for substantial rewards.
  1. Commercial Real Estate REITs Logic:
  • In-game scenes (e.g., maps) treated as income-bearing assets.
  • Players will be able to purchase portions of these in-game scenes and share in the game revenue proportional to their ownership, similar to how REITs distribute dividends from commercial real estate.
  1. Server Ownership Logic:
  • A limited number of high-value server licenses will be available, encouraging influential players, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and guilds to establish their own servers.
  • Server owners will be able to customize their server specifications, including tax rates and in-game pass prices.
  • Server owners will pay the game developer a fixed license fee for a specific period and a percentage of the revenue generated by their server.
  1. Retail Distribution Logic:
  • Based on NFT holdings, influential players, whales, and guilds will be able to acquire in-game goods at lower prices and sell them to their communities.
  • This approach shifts the pressure of profit margin compression to distributors, encouraging them to internalize margins and enhance the value proposition for their communities.

By integrating these logical frameworks, Moonveil ensures a dynamic and engaging ecosystem that rewards players, fosters community growth, and provides sustainable revenue streams.

Investment Thesis

On a strategic level, Moonveil is different and efficient in the approach to general public gaming experience

Moonveil Studio, as a team of industry leaders and competitive gamers, understands well the dynamics and player profiles of Web 3.0 users. Hence, they came up with a thorough and comprehensive analysis to understand the current and future trends in gaming. They predict a new gaming paradigm of "reducing player energy consumption" and "increasing player experience feedback intensity."

To elaborate further, the team recognizes a growing trend in digital exposure to the younger audience, who are the target customers of games. This increase in screentime, made possible by advancements in technology, naturally brings more ways for gamers to experience games in less traditional ways. These include watching streams, highlights, gameplays, tips and tricks, third-party game mechanic enhancement platforms, and cross-platform collaboration events between games and celebrities, web 2 brands, etc.

From this realization, Moonveil adopted the Multi-layer Pyramid structure (see pic below) that accomodates gamers with different user profiles. With each Pyramid, Moonveil adopts a different strategy on game development, user acquisition. retention and monetization but maintains their core thesis of developing Flagship Games to define their core experience and Moonveil brand.

Moonveil value-acrue mechanism

When considering investments in the Web 3 gaming sector, it is generally regarded as more prudent to invest in gaming blockchains rather than individual Web 3 games. Moonveil, in this case offers an opportunity to engage in both and elevate the concept to the next level.

The biggest difference in economic design of Moonveil and a big part of our Moonveil thesis is the fact that all the economic value from Moonveil L2 will be acrued into $MORE. Traditionally, Web 3 games shall have a 2 token model with a tradable governance token and a non-tradable ingame currency, eventually some value of the game shall be acrued to the host blockchain’s native token in the form of Gas fee, staking or other incentive programs. Due to the nature of gaming blockchain to be gas cheap, the aforementioned model does not align well with gas token’s value acrue mechanism. Moonveil aims to change that by only having $MORE as the native gas token and the game governance token for every games that features in their ecosystem with the company of a native ingame currency, non-tradable token.

Strong leadership and traditional gaming background, aka “Riot Mafia”

The Founder / CEO MJ Wang was the China GM of Riot Games for 7 years, leading the publishing of League of Legend in Greater China. Other core team members were also senior leaders from Riot, including the ex-CTO Chris and the Head of Saff Jason, not to mention the other senior core team members and head of studio/tech leads from Tencent, NetEase and CARV, also strengthening the team.

The team is undoubtedly capable of shipping their product with a steadfast pace and retain the structure of a Web 2 studio. The understanding of general public gaming audience is also worth highlighting as the team is targeting Web 2 gamer audience with the help of Web 3 blockchain technology.

Strong technical combination

As the upcoming flagship zkEVM L2, Moonveil’s blockchain technical capability is maintained by the worldclass team from their in-house talents, Polygon tech team, and the strategic partner Gateway’s RaaS team, making the crew as one of the best technical team for EVMs.

The insightfulness and technical proficiency of the team secure a bright future for Moonveil’s ecosystem of games. The partnership with Polygon and the utilization of their AggLayer will ensure seamless connectivity and interoperability with the rest of the web3 space, allowing for the first time a truly abstracted web3 gaming experience, paired with a web2 development pipeline and game quality.

Risk Evaluation

Smart Contract Risk

Mitigation: Moonveil Studio prioritizes security by investing significant resources and undergoing audits by top firms such. Additionally, they adopt core technologies like the Polygon CDK, which are considered industry gold standards.

Economic Risk

Every token faces economic risks, such as low liquidity and high volatility.

Mitigation: Moonveil collaborates with industry leaders in market making and is currently in talks with centralized exchanges to ensure high liquidity and mitigate these risks.

Adoption Risk

Both individual games and blockchain ecosystems require substantial user traction and adoption to succeed. This can be challenging due to increasing competition.

Mitigation: The Web2 sector is arguably more competitive than Web3, yet these builders have demonstrated their capability to generate robust traction in the past. Initial KPIs show that they have what’s necessary to achieve significant user adoption for their products.
